Like many other bivalve mollusks, it filter-feeds on phytoplankton through its gills. Derasa, Squamosa and Gigas clams are best placed on sandy substrate and typically need less intense lighting. Since we have Tridacna maxima clams, I placed them in the rock work. We want to place them in areas of lower lighting to allow them to acclimate because they are new. Crocea clams are a little different than the derasa. They live in the rocks mainly, which usually gets more light than the sand bed in the ocean.

I have kept about a dozen derasa over the years and have to be pretty diligent to get the ones I have, never ever seen anything close to this though! Unlike most other species of clams, the Derasa Clam has a mostly smooth shell without prominent scutes.
